Sovereign Leads Restoration of Buick Street to Protect Community Safety and Food Integrity

GQEBERHA, SOUTH AFRICA – Sovereign, one of South Africa’s leading poultry producers, is proving that being “Full of Goodness” extends far beyond the plate. In a proactive move to safeguard local infrastructure and food safety standards, Sovereign has announced its role as the lead sponsor in a R1.4 million private-sector project to rebuild Buick Street in the Markman Industrial Area.

The initiative, driven by the Markman Business Forum, comes in response to the severe degradation of road infrastructure in the area. Buick Street, a vital artery for local commerce, has become nearly impassable due to heavy-duty manganese transport. For Sovereign, which operates a major cold storage and processing facility on the road, the “wait-and-see” approach regarding municipal repairs was no longer an option.

“At Sovereign, our commitment to being ‘Full of Goodness’ means we take responsibility for the quality of our environment and the safety of our products,” says Ben Greyling – Head of Logistics and Warehousing. “When infrastructure fails, it doesn’t just impact logistics; it impacts people, safety, and the high standards of food integrity our customers expect. By leading this restoration, we are investing in the future of Markman and the stability of the local economy.”

While road maintenance is traditionally a municipal function, the local business community has stepped in to prevent a total collapse of the route. Sovereign has committed R600,000 to the project, with the remaining funding sourced through a collaborative effort involving other key businesses in the area, and proceeds from the Markman Business Forum’s upcoming Golf Day in April.

The project will focus on a 230-meter stretch of Buick Street, utilising high-grade, 200mm thick concrete reinforced with steel mesh. This heavy-duty specification is designed to withstand the unique pressures of industrial traffic, ensuring a long-term solution rather than a temporary patch.

Beyond the physical damage to vehicles, the current state of the road has created a significant dust hazard. For a food-focused business like Sovereign, dust ingress represents a serious risk to food safety protocols and regulatory certifications.

“The dust isn’t just a nuisance; it’s a hazard to road visibility and a potential threat to the sterile environments required for food processing,” continues Greyling. “By fixing this road, we are ensuring that our Buick Cold Storage facility remains a world-class hub and that any future plans to re-commission our processing plant are not compromised by external environmental factors.”

Sovereign remains committed to the Nelson Mandela Bay region. Its investment reflects a deep-seated belief in the potential of the Nelson Mandela Bay industrial hubs. By taking the lead on this R1.4 million project, Sovereign and its partners are demonstrating that through collaboration and a “Goodness” mindset, local businesses can ensure the region remains open for business, safe for workers, and fit for the future.
